Married Cops Foil Armed Robbery While Out On 'Date Night'

They say couples who foil crime together, stay together.

Two married, off-duty cops who were in the right place at the right time, managed to stop an armed robbery while they were on a date at a Kentucky chicken restaurant.

Detective Chase McKeown and his wife, Officer Nicole McKeown, were out on Feb. 15 enjoying their weekly date night at a Raising Canes in Louisville, when they noticed a man wearing a surgical mask and a black hooded sweatshirt enter the restaurant.

Surveillance video of the incident showed the suspect flashing what appears to be a gun at the cashier, while pointing repeatedly at the cash register. The footage then switches to the McKeowns, who can be seen watching the man with interest from a booth toward the rear of the restaurant.

"That’s where that repetitiveness and that training kicks in,” Nicole McKeown told WAVE.

Video shows the McKeowns standing up and drawing their weapons as they move quickly toward the suspect, ordering him to give up. The suspect, identified later by police as Justin Carter, spots the couple running toward him and he flees the restaurant.

According to a statement from the Elizabethtown Police Department, the McKeowns managed to catch up with Carter after chasing him through downtown Louisville. They were able to arrest him with the help of local law enforcement.

“In marriage we’ve got each other,” Chase McKeown said. “We’re going to talk things out, we’re going to deal with whatever comes at us."

The couple met on the job while working at EPD, when Chase McKeown was a patrol officer and she was a dispatcher at the agency. The couple has been married for the past six months, the department said.

According to WHAS, Carter is a convicted felon who had used a weapon stolen from a Jeffersontown police officer. He was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, and robbery in conjunction with the alleged crime. Carter appeared in court on Feb. 17 and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 25.

“You never know who’s minding their own business but ready to put in work," the Louisville Metro Police Department said in a statement.
