ANIMAL CRACKERS: Popular Cookies are Uncaged

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Would anyone have even noticed the design change? The new package still has pictures of animals on it.
  • The name is not being changed even though there is no more Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
  • It's still mostly kids who eat animal crackers, but who doesn't still love them?
  • Is PETA eventually going to urge Nabisco to stop making cookies in the shape of animals?

Packages of the company's popular Barnum Animal cookies no longer show caged animals riding on a circus train. The animals are now depicted roaming freely among grass and trees. The change was made at the urging of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) which began lobbying for the change several years ago.

A statement released by the group reads, "The new box for Barnum's Animal Crackers perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates the caging and chaining of wild animals for circus shows. PETA is celebrating this redesign, just as we've celebrated the end of Ringling Bros. circus and the introduction of animal-circus bans across the U.S." (Fortune)
